What is the hostel life like at The Doon School?

At The Doon School, hostel life is not a support system for the school. It is the school.
The Chandbagh campus has seven boarding houses: five main houses (Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kashmir, Tata, and Oberoi) and two first-year holding houses (Foot and Martyn, named after former headmasters). Every boy is assigned to a house on arrival and stays in that house for his entire time at Doon.
Each house has a resident Housemaster and a Tutor. A schoolmaster personally assigned to each boy, responsible for his academic progress and pastoral welfare. There are no prefects; no student holds authority over another.
Life in the house is deliberately simple. Shared living spaces, communal meals, and a structured daily routine. The discipline of daily routine; rising, training, studying, and sleeping is built into the structure of every day.
Old Boys consistently describe the house as the place where they learned to live with others, to take responsibility, and to belong to something larger than themselves. That is not an accident. It is the design.
