The Lawrence School, Sanawar is one of India’s oldest co-educational boarding schools. Set at 1,750 metres in the Himalayan foothills near Kasauli — approximately one hour from Chandigarh — it occupies 139 acres of forested hillside in Solan District, Himachal Pradesh.
Founded on 15 April 1847 by Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence and Lady Honoria Lawrence, Sanawar has spent 179 years producing students who have gone on to lead in public life, business, government, sport, and the arts. Its motto, Never Give In, reflects a culture of resilience, discipline, and self-reliance that continues to define the school today.
For families who understand the difference between a school’s ranking and its character, Sanawar requires very little introduction.
Sanawar is one of only six schools or colleges in the former British Empire ever to have been presented with the King’s Colours — an honour received on 30 June 1853, alongside Eton, Shrewsbury, Cheltenham, the Duke of York’s Royal Military School, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Sanawar has held its Colours for the longest unbroken period of any institution on that list.
Control passed from the British government to the autonomous Lawrence School (Sanawar) Society in 1953. By convention, the Chairman of the Society is the Secretary for Education, Government of India — an arrangement without parallel in Indian education.
The school is a member of:
What an institution builds over 179 years cannot be summarised in a prospectus. It is perhaps better measured in the people who carry it forward. I.K. Gujral, India’s 12th Prime Minister, called Sanawar not just a school but an institution. Puneet Renjen, Global CEO of Deloitte, credits it with teaching him the discipline of making his bed each morning. These are not marketing claims. They are the words of people shaped by this place.
The campus is the education. 139 acres of pine, deodar, and conifer woodland at 1,750 metres — spread across a hilltop with views of the Kasauli ridge and the Himalayan ranges beyond.
Academic Spaces
Sports Infrastructure
The school offers facilities for cricket, hockey, football, basketball, tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, swimming, athletics, boxing, gymnastics, air rifle and air pistol shooting, cycling, and yoga.
The Peacestead (Arun Kheterpal Stadium) marks the location where the school’s original tents were pitched in 1847. Adventure activities including trekking, camping, white water rafting, and rock climbing are integrated into school life through direct access to the Himalayan foothills.
Health and Pastoral Care
Boarding at Sanawar is central to the educational experience. The school places strong emphasis on independence, discipline, teamwork, leadership, and community living. The boarding houses — known to generations of students simply as their houses — are where much of what Sanawar produces actually happens.
The House System
Every student belongs to one of four houses — for life.
| House | Colour | Motto |
| Himalaya | Yellow | Certa Bonum Certamen — Fight the good fight |
| Nilagiri | Blue | Virtute et Valore — Strength and Courage |
| Siwalik | Green | Levius Fit Patientia — Patience makes it lighter |
| Vindhya | Red | Fyno Ouw Lerfid — God’s will, will be |
Prep Department (Classes V and VI) operates as a fully independent unit with its own classrooms, games, hobbies, meals, and study schedule — a deliberate transition into boarding life before children move into the main departments.
Boys’ Department has four main houses plus a Holding House for Class V. Each house has a Senior Housemaster, Junior Housemaster, matron, and team of tutors. A prefectorial body elected from Class XII assists with house management.
Girls’ Department — Honoria Court was established in 1943. It has three sections covering all year groups, with six housemistresses, three matrons, and eighteen tutors. A new dormitory extension is currently under construction.
The Hodson Run. Every medically fit student runs this 3 to 5 km cross-country route at the start of each Spring Term. For most alumni, it is among their most enduring memories of the school. The Hodson Finals in April are among the most keenly contested inter-house events of the year.
The school is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and offers classes from V to XII.

Important Notes * All fee figures sourced from the Official Fee Structure PDF 2026 on sanawar.edu.in. Fees are subject to annual upward revision. Confirm current figures directly with the school before making any financial commitment.
Note: The bursary column totals appear higher than the standard total because the bursary is applied to the instalment amounts rather than as a simple percentage reduction. Families eligible for defence bursaries should confirm the exact computation directly with the school. The Caution Money of Rs. 6,00,000 is fully refundable on the student’s departure from the school. Late payment attracts a penalty of 5% per month. Non-payment within 15 days of the due date results in the student’s name being struck from rolls.
Life Beyond the Classroom
Physical activity begins the day at Sanawar — every student completes half an hour of physical training before breakfast. Sport is not optional and is not supplementary. It is central.
Sports offered: Cricket, hockey, football, basketball, tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, swimming, athletics, boxing, gymnastics, air rifle and air pistol shooting, cycling, and yoga.
Annual tournaments hosted by the school:
Societies, Clubs and Hobbies: Carpentry, pottery, sculpture, painting, music, dance, academic clubs, and SNAMUN — the school’s own Model United Nations conference drawing delegates from across India.
SUPW: Structured community engagement with the surrounding area — a formal part of school life at Sanawar.
Round Square: International conferences, virtual exchanges, and collaborative programmes with schools across 20+ countries.
Sanawar does not publish a university placement list. It does not need to. The school’s alumni record — a Prime Minister, a Global CEO of one of the world’s largest professional services firms, a Chief Election Commissioner, national sports champions — speaks to an institution that produces people capable of succeeding in any environment they choose to enter.
The broad senior secondary offering across sciences, humanities, commerce, arts, music, and technology ensures students are not forced into a narrow track before they are ready. The Round Square membership, HMC affiliation, and IAYP programme are chosen deliberately to prepare students for an internationally connected and intellectually serious adult life.

“The lessons Sanawar instills in us are what make journeys like mine possible. Beyond the academics, it’s the discipline I learned making my bed every morning. The resilience I learned in the boxing ring. The interpersonal skills I learned in the dorm. All have been key to my success.” — Puneet Renjen, Global CEO, Deloitte
