In an exclusive with ET Education, Robin Mason, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Birmingham, outlined a bold vision for the future of global education, centered on strategic UK-India partnerships, AI integration, and student employability.
Mason emphasized that the UK and India are aligning education around shared priorities like AI, sustainability, and workforce readiness. The University of Birmingham is expanding its footprint in India through dual degrees, research centers, and industry collaboration, especially in climate resilience and data science.
Indian students face challenges post-study, Mason noted, including visa hurdles and limited local job awareness. To bridge this gap, Birmingham and Glasgow universities are launching an India-based graduate career service, offering pre-departure briefings, employer ties, and alumni mentorship.
On AI, Mason called 2025 a pivotal year, applauding India’s “Year of AI” declaration. He stressed AI’s potential for personalized learning and predictive support, while urging ethical awareness.
Looking ahead, Mason advocates for a more inclusive and digital global education model, based on mutual respect and long-term impact, not just student recruitment.
